Brute force

Sometimes having the right tool isn't enough.  Flex your muscles – you might need them.

Chain Holder

This is a simple tool we've made to help when fitting or removing a chain - it's not essential but will make the job easier.

The holder keeps tension on the chain to stop it falling off the bike but leaves a small section of chain with no tension so it's easier to put into the chain tool.

Chain Tool Suitable for 9 Speed Chains

A chain tool is used to 'break' the chain for installation or removal.

Back in the day all chaintools were created equal but with modern chains becoming narrower and more precise different styles of chain tool have evolved - if you're buying a new chain tool be sure that it's compatible with the type of chain you're going to use it on.

Some chain tools have have two cradles:  The front cradle is used for breaking the chain and for installing a new chain pin.

The rear cradle is used for loosening stiff chainlinks and should never be used for joining or breaking the chain.

Some chain tools only have one cradle and are designed with a precise width to minimize stiff chain links when joining a chain.

A chain tool is a bicycle specific tool which can be purchased from your favourite bicycle retailer.

Chain whip

A chainwhip is used to stop the rear cassette from rotating when removing the cassette lockring.

A chainwhip is a bicycle specific tool which can be purchased from your local retailer.

Derailleur Hanger Alignment Tool

This tool is used to check and alignment of the rear derailleur hanger, and can be used to straighten the hanger if it's bent.

Derailleur hanger alignment tools are quite expensive however they are the most accurate way of measuring and correcting a bent derailleur hanger. A less accurate but far cheaper method is to use a rear hub axle as a subsitute.

A derailleur hanger alignment tool is a bicycle-specific tool which can be purchased from your favorite retailer.

Friction Paste

Friction paste, also known as “carbon paste,” is a grease-like substance which can be used on the mounting surfaces of aluminium or carbon fiber components such as seatposts and handlebars.  Common uses are to prevent seatposts from slipping in the frame or handlebars from rotating in the stem.

Friction paste also acts as a corrosion protector and can help to reduce creaking.

Friction paste can be purchased from your favorite retailer.

Grease

Grease is a thick lubricant commonly used on bicycle bearings and when installing components.

Grease is not bicycle-specific however many companies sell grease which is optimized for use on bicycles.

Grease can be purchased from your favourite retailer.

Hammer

Every mechanic has his favorite hammer - it can be used for gracefully (or not so gracefully) dislodging stuck parts or anything else where a gentle love-tap is needed.

There are also soft-face hammers which can be used when damage from the hammer might occur.

Marker Pen

A marker pen is a handy tool to keep in your toolbox.

Pedal Wrench

The pedal wrench is used for fitting and removing pedals with wrench flats on the axle.

The pedal wrench is a standard 15mm wrench but is thinner to fit onto the narrow pedal axles.  Most pedals have long handles to help remove stuck pedals.

Some pedals have fitting for a hex key in the back of the axle - you will not need a pedal wrench for this type of pedal.

Pliers

Pliers are a handheld tool which are used to incrase holding grip on an item.  The tips of pliers can also be used for manipulating and bending small items.

Pliers come in many different shapes - the most useful for bicycles are the needle-nose type like what is pictured.

Ruler

A ruler is a handy tool to keep in your toolbox.

While not being bicycle-specific there are rulers from Park Tool and DT Swiss which can be used to easily measure spokes.  These can be purchased from your favorite retailer.

Screwdriver - Slotted Head

A slotted screwdriver has a single slot.  It is generally rare to find screws on a bicycle which use this type of screw.

Slotted head screw drivers are available in different sizes so be careful to select the correct size for the screw you're working with.  Look for the screwdriver to fit securly into the screw head – too big and it won't fit into the head of the screw, too small and it will cam out under load which can damage the screw.

Slotted screwdrivers are not bicycle specific but can be purchased from bicycle shops and are often included as part of a multi-tool.

Shimano cassette tool

This is a bicycle-specific tool required to remove the lockrings on Shimano or SRAM cassettes as well as the lockrings on most Shimano Center Lock brake rotors.

These tools are very useful, are low cost, and last a very long time. Some versions of this tool (like the one pictured) use a guide pin to steady the tool by holding it in the hollow center of a quick release axle.

Campagnolo cassettes use a similar style of tool which are visually similar however they are not compatible.

Shimano Disc Hose Clamp Blocks

These handy plastic blocks hold a Shimano hydraulic disc hose in a vise to help with fitting a disc barb.

This is a bicycle-specific tool which is included with most Shimano disc hose and disc brake kits, or it can be purchased from your favorite retailer.

Soft-Face Hammer

A soft-face hammer is used when a normal hammer might cause damage to the item being struck.  The most common use of a soft-face hammer is for dislodging stuck parts.

The face of the hammer is generally made from some sort of plastic and is sometimes filled with sand or lead shot.

This is not a bicycle specific tool.
